My name is Letrice. I'm 20. I believe in feminism. This includes but is not limited to: Stuff relating to feminism/racism/other activist stuff, movies, books, music, and occasionally k-pop. Sorry for that last one.

It really disheartens me to see anti-porn critics who make no effort to have a dialogue with actual porn models/other people in the industry. They make general assumptions about the industry but make no attempt to learn about or understand the industry or the people within it.

So apparently gay porn is misogynistic

Yeah I’m not feeling this opinion at all either. I don’t see how a video depiction of two male bodied people having consensual sex, something that is entirely removed from women, can be misogynist.

That said, there is a lot of anti-feminine sentiment among gay men, something that I suppose carries over into mainstream pornography sometimes. I can’t speak for gay men since I’m not one, but more than a few have expressed the sentiment that feminine gay men are not “real” men and that is indeed very sexist. But to say that because a video features two models who are male-presenting and very masculine it’s misogynist is absurd. How can having masculine models in a scene be promoting hatred against women when all women aren’t feminine or female-presenting? Why can’t it be that that’s just the way the two models like to look and present themselves? If all gay porn models were feminine, would that make it suddenly not-misogynist?

I think a more purposeful criticism of gay porn is to say that it’s more homophobic than anything else, as strange as that might sound. A lot of gay porn is produced under the whole gay-for-pay scenario where the viewer is led to believe that one or both of the male participants is straight and is only taking part in the sex for money. It’s usually fake as fuck and everyone knows it, and I understand that for some gay male viewers it provides a fantasy, but it all feels a little homophobic to me. Of course, not all or even most gay porn is produced like this, but it’s a common subcategory.

Mainstream gay porn is also really fucking racist. Like really racist. And segregated. That’s part of why I got kinda bored of it.

So I mean, with those criticisms in mind it strikes me as very odd that alleged misogyny would be the first thing one would jump to in criticisms of porn.

Do you know why people say gay male porn is misogynist? I am not pro porn at all. I just dont understand why people make the argument that the receiver or submissive in gay porn is impersonating a woman so gay porn = women hate. If somebody sees two men having sex and considers one of them a 'woman impersonator' arent they projecting their OWN homophobic and misogynist views onto things? Isnt it enough to argue that commodifying and selling *anyone's* body is horrible?

I talked about that a bit in this post, though now that I’m reading it again I don’t think that I expressed myself particularly well.

I believe that gay porn is misogynist for two central reasons. The first of these is that the smaller and frailer in appearance of the men always takes the submissive role during sex. I would argue that this is because being penetrated is associated with women and femaleness, as is physical weakness. The idea of a large, strong man being penetrated by a smaller, more delicate one is unimaginable, because this would constitute an overt rejection of the masculine gender role. The more physically powerful man would in essence be seen as lowering himself to the “women’s role,” which would elicit disgust in the viewer.

This brings me to the second aspect of misogyny that is present in gay porn, which I had never really considered before cisfiend pointed it out to me. (He is, sadly, no longer on Tumblr, but I wanted to credit him anyway.) There is absolutely no room for expressions of femininity in gay porn whatsoever. If you pay attention to the types of men who are featured, they nearly always conform very closely to the masculine gender role, and this is true even in the case of “twink” performers who are valued for their thin and youthful appearance. This is likely in part because consumers of gay porn are incredibly hostile towards men in porn who are perceived as being even slightly feminine. In addition to this, it is quite common for “tops” to use misogynist slurs against “bottoms” during sex, which links back to what I said earlier about the role of the receiver in anal sex being associated with women. The receptive partner is a “bitch” and a “slut” because he has allowed himself to be lowered to a position associated with femaleness and thus with inferiority.

I hope that this made sense; it’s been a long day and an even longer week.

that’s not true 100% of the time though, i’ve seen lots of scenes where the smaller model is dominant

there’s definitely a lot of anti-femininity and misogyny amongst gay men but i don’t think it’s fair to paint all gay porn as misogynist because of the people who consume it.

not fair to who?

because porn isn’t fair anyway, it supports voyeurism and other paraphilias.

The models who work in the industry and the professionals who work alongside them to produce it, that’s who.

In pornography, even “soft core” pornography, women are always referred to by names such as “slut” and “whore.” This is not just in the “fetish” section but is rather the everyday language of all porn. In harder core porn we are called names such as cum pigs, cum dumpsters, meat holes, cock sockets, human toilets, cunts, bitches, etc. And this is supposed to be “liberating.” Liberating for whom? The words “bitch”, “slut”, and “cunt” are often the last words a woman hears right before she is beaten, raped or killed. By (via spookycommie)
